What do you get when you combine 21 economies, global leaders, and a vision for “a resilient and sustainable future for all”? That’s the spirit APEC brought to Detroit. Welcoming everyone alongside partners like Global Ties Detroit and the Michigan Economic Development Council, a senior State Department official shared how much of an honor it is for the U.S. to host this year’s APEC meetings.
Why does APEC matter?
APEC isn’t just a network; it’s 21 Pacific Rim economies—stretching from Asia to Latin America—working together for over 30 years to boost trade, innovation, and sustainable, inclusive growth. “Together, we account for half of global trade,” the official noted, highlighting the group’s influence.
Putting Inclusion and SMEs Center Stage
A key focus for APEC: making economic inclusion real. That means putting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)—the lifeblood of communities—at the heart of the agenda. The organization even holds a unique SME Ministerial meeting to ensure these businesses access supply chains, markets, and the support they need.
But inclusion goes even further. The U.S. has a proud legacy: in 2011, it led efforts on women’s economic empowerment within APEC. “When women fully participate, our economies are more prosperous.” This year, the Women and Economy Forum will even overlap with the SME meeting, uniting energy for women-owned businesses.

“Our theme is creating a resilient and sustainable future for all—and it’s really the 'for all' that matters,” the official emphasized. From underrepresented groups to diverse communities across the U.S. and Asia-Pacific, making sure no one is left behind is at the core of APEC’s mission.
